After six months of dating, Chris proposes to Beth. His enthusiastic family runs with the wedding planning \u2014 only to include unorthodox items on the program, causing Beth to leave her wedding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For my 25th birthday this year, my boyfriend, Chris, whisked me off to Hawaii.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a fairytale because we had only been dating for six months, and I wasn\u2019t expecting anything. But then, Chris proposed to me on the beach \u2014 I said yes, swept away by the enchantment of the moment, although I knew that six months of knowing someone was not enough before marrying them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Little did I know that fairytale was about to unravel into more drama than I had signed up for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wasn\u2019t one of those girls who spent hours dreaming up their wedding. So when Chris\u2019s family, fueled by their eagerness and involvement, took complete control over every detail of the wedding, even offering to foot the bill \u2014 I allowed it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ll admit that there were moments when I felt sidelined, especially when I said that shades of blue for the color scheme weren\u2019t my cup of tea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But contributing to their enthusiasm was the better option than fighting with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat? Why?\u201d I exclaimed, already thinking about tripping over something while walking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI can barely walk properly in these heels with my eyes open,\u201d I chuckled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just tradition,\u201d Leeanne said. \u201cI did it, too. The whole thing is about seeing your husband first \u2014 the first thing out of the darkness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe\u2019s supposed to be the light,\u201d Chris\u2019s sister, Maggie, giggled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The whole thing sounded strange. It wasn\u2019t anything I had heard of before, but I also knew that people always came up with superstitions and stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI wouldn\u2019t have to wear a blindfold and mess up my make-up, right?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo, just close your eyes and hold onto your father\u2019s hand tightly,\u201d Leeanne said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I told my Dad what I needed to do, he laughed, thinking I was joking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was absurd, of course. But my wedding only got worse from there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the altar, I opened my eyes, expecting the loving gaze of my fianc\u00e9, but I got way more than I bargained for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chris smiled at me, and after a second, another sight sent shockwaves through me \u2014 a woman in a white dress stood behind him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, Julia stepped forward and held her arms open for the boy, ready for him to walk in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is Eli,\u201d she said, looking at me. \u201cHe\u2019s six years old, and he is autistic. He\u2019s the best part of me, but he\u2019s also part of Chris. Elizabeth, this is our son.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut he wouldn\u2019t tell you that,\u201d Maggie chimed in from next to me \u2014 she was one of my bridesmaids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But there was none. Instead, he fingered his watch nervously, guilt undeniable on his face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell me?\u201d I demanded, my voice shaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t know how,\u201d he stammered, avoiding eye contact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I turned to look at Eli, who was holding tightly onto Julia\u2019s hand and looking around the room. I could clearly see Chris\u2019s features all over his face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou let me believe that your divorce was admirable and that there were no ties to Julia,\u201d I said. \u201cBut you abandoned your family. You abandoned your son.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe abandoned Eli when he found out that he was autistic,\u201d Maggie said loudly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My heart sank. How could I have almost married a man who was so thoughtless and cold? He left his son behind because of something that he was born with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the truth unfolded, I felt I was drowning in the weight of everything. Leeanne, upon discovering that Chris wanted to remarry, had orchestrated this dramatic revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It turned out that my wedding was just a harsh, public lesson aimed at a man who had turned his back on his responsibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I kicked off my heels, handed them to Maggie, and walked away from the altar \u2014 not as a bride but as a woman who had narrowly escaped a life bound to deceit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The experience was painful \u2014 sure, it had only been six months of knowing Chris, but I knew what I had felt for him was real. That\u2019s why it hurt so much when I found out the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m just grateful that the only thing I had to pay for was my wedding dress \u2014 which had been returned three days after the so-called wedding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even now, when I think about the entire episode, I admit I\u2019m not mad about it all. Leeanne did what she needed to do. And she did it to protect me and that sweet little boy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
